The smell of the ocean, surf culture, palm trees, colourful kites in the sky, and locals riding horses on the beach. Welcome to Máncora – a bohemian surf town in the north of Peru. Grab a pisco sour, and enjoy the laid back vibe. In this travel guide I collaborate with Qema hotel, and I will show you how to experience Máncora to the fullest.
How to get to Máncora?
Máncora is a beach town located in the Piura region on the northern coast of Peru, around 187 km from Piura city. It’s a popular surf, holiday and party destination. However there is so much more to find in this bohemian town.
The easiest routes:
- Fly to Talara (TYL) – about 1.5 hours by car/taxi to Máncora
- Fly to Tumbes (TBP) – about 2 hours by car or bus
- Fly to Piura (PIU) – around 3.5 to 4 hours to Máncora
You can also take a comfortable overnight bus from Lima (18–20 hrs), or shorter routes from Piura, Tumbes or Talara (2–4 hrs) with companies like Cruz del Sur, Civa, or Eppo. Optional you can choose for a ‘cama’ (fully reclining seat) for more comfort if you travel from the capital.
Best place to stay
Personally I would recommend to stay at Qema Máncora if you are a digital nomad, influencer, couple or a group of friends looking for a party. It’s a stylish 4-star beach hotel located next to the Panamericana Norte Highway, and directly on the beach. You can choose rooms ranging from shared dorm rooms, glamping-style tents to oceanview suites, and curved wooden capsules. Qema is a combination of luxury and creativity while sustaining eco friendly practises to protect the local culture and wildlife in the environment.

Why I like the location?
The area is a mix of luxury and bohemian atmosphere. You can basically get up in the morning and go barefoot to the beach and enjoy a run, grab a surf board, or if you are lucky even spot a whale from the coast.

Interior design
For me personally as a travel journalist it’s a great place to be creative and take photogenic pictures. The interior of Qema is a mix of minimalist design and rustic-chic elements. Think natural wood, clean white walls, artisan textiles, and open-air spaces that let the ocean breeze in. The design is functional yet warm, balancing modern comfort with coastal charm. Just to be honest a must go for everyone that loves to take pictures.
Accommodation
It all depends of your own preferences. Do you want a private room or share a space with others. Still in both cases you get high comfort levels: quality bedding, strong A/C, and thoughtful design. Many rooms offer garden or partial ocean views, with private terraces or balconies. Hammocks are standard. It’s quiet, private, and ideal for writing, resting, or remote work during the day. In the night you can enjoy live music, and nightlife to certain hours so you can still be rested for the next day.
Who visits Qema?
It’s a must go for couples on romantic escapes, solo digital nomads seeking a quiet workspace near the ocean, wellness seekers, low-key surf travelers, and groups of friends looking for nightlife music. You’ll also spot the occasional content creator that wants to capture the creative architecture and beach environment during the golden hour.
Onsight activities
If you stay at Qema you can also join daily activities like Yoga classes on a shaded rooftop, artistic workshops, surf sessions, relaxing massage, sunset dips in the pool, and local cuisine. The town center is a short walk away for ceviche tastings, travel tours or nightlife.
Eco-friendly
Plastic-free toiletries, water refill stations, solar panels heated water, and local sourcing for breakfast and decor. While not fully off-grid, Qema makes a conscious effort toward sustainability and low-impact tourism. That’s very important in my opinion. They do their best to protect the cultural heritage by employing local people, and sustain eco-friendly practises to help out the nature and wildlife like turtles and whales in the area.
Personal experience
I spend many times working on my laptop during the day to enjoy the ocean breeze and a cafesito. In the night you can cool off with music and some pisco sours. It’s definitely worth staying at Qema to connect with like-minded people that are ambitious in business and different life areas.
History of the surf town
Before Máncora became a backpacker haven or surf destination, Máncora’s coast was inhabited by pre-Inca cultures—most notably the Tallán and Sechura peoples. These early inhabitants were expert fishermen and used reed boats (caballitos de totora) to harvest the sea. The area’s rich marine biodiversity made it an essential part of their survival and trade. In the 19th and early 20th century, the construction of the Panamericana Norte highway (connecting Tumbes to Lima) placed Máncora on the map as a transit stop, but the village still retained a small, tight-knit population focused on artisanal fishing and small-scale agriculture.
Everything changed in the 1960s, when a wave of surfers—both Peruvian and international—began discovering Máncora’s long, warm-water left-hand point break. This sparked the beginnings of what would become a surf town. The introduction of basic hostels, surf shacks, and seafood eateries began to shift Máncora from a village into a travel destination. Word-of-mouth spread, and by the late 1990s, Máncora had become a hot spot for young travelers seeking sun, waves, and freedom.
In the early 2000s, Máncora’s reputation exploded. It began appearing in Lonely Planet, Condé Nast Traveler, and international travel blogs. Hotels, resorts, and eco-lodges began popping up along the beachfront. Wealthy Peruvians from Lima built vacation homes here. It also attracted digital nomads and wellness travelers looking for retreats, yoga, and slow living by the sea.
Unfortunately, this growth also brought infrastructure strain, gentrification, and environmental pressure-issues that locals and sustainability-minded hoteliers are still trying to navigate today. That’s why Qema really makes a difference in my opinion with employing local people, and thinking about sustainability practises to protect the nature in the area and wildlife. If you go to Máncora, you can still see local fishermen catch fish, and prepare ceviche in the traditional way.
What to do in Máncora?
Surfing
The Pacific waves of Máncora are warmer then in Lima and perfect for beginners and intermediates. You can find at the spot local surf schools renting out boards. Also at Qema you can find a board that fits your level of experience. For the bigger swells you can visit the months of December to March. I was one time lucky to see a turtle in the water.
Horseback riding
If you walk on the beach you will be for sure approached by some locals if you want a ride on a horse. You can take a ride from Máncora in the direction of Pocitas or Playa de Amor for a more relaxed experience. You will for sure not regret the pictures on the horse.
Light House
You will be not able to miss this one. Above the town of Máncora you can spot the iconic light house. I would recommend to go there for the sunset. Don’t forget to bring a towel, some empanada’s and coconut water or wine to enjoy a picnic with a viewpoint. There is also a new café where you can get coffee and drinks as well.
Kiteboarding
If it’s a windy day the surfers make place for kiteboarders. You will see the sky turn colourful with many kites in the air. Máncora is a great place to learn kiteboarding or wing foiling (a new popular watersport). You can find many kiteboarding schools. I would recommend Andre Castañeda from Geko Kite & Surf for the best learning experience. I was able to learn with a jet ski to stand on a foil board and his colleague taught me how to use a wing with the wind.
Whales Expedition
Mid-July to end of October you can spot whales in the ocean of Máncora. I would recommend to take an authorised tour to see the humpback whales from nearby. We went with Martin Tours to watch the whales. It was a magical experience. The captain was very funny, and his crew member let us hear the whales sing through the hydrophone. We saw the whales jump, spotted some dolphins and pelicans as well.
Swim with sea turtles
In El Ñuro, 20 minutes south of Máncora by moto or taxi you can get the experience to swim with sea turtles, We did actually the tour with the whales and were able to swim with the turtles near the coast of Máncora in a protected area close to the pier. We heard it’s recommended to go early in the morning when you want a more private experience in El Ñuro.
Sunrise Yoga
If you are an early bird you don’t want to miss out on the sunrise yoga. Qema is a great place to get this experience. I would recommend to rent a paddleboard and do some yoga stands in the water. It’s a very creative way to practise. There are also teachers that help you out so that you can feel more comfortable if it’s your first time with the paddleboard and yoga.
Ceviche & pisco sour
In Máncora the Peruvian gastronomy is just mouthwatering. Check out Cevicheria Los Delfines for the best seafood in town. Also don’t forget to try the famous Peruvian Pisco Sour. I had my best drink in Saxsay – a Japanese Fusion restaurant. Walking on the beach to Pocitas you can also spot some locals selling oysters on the beach. Definitely try it out for a raw and fresh experience. On the pier you can also find some vendors of ‘conchas negras’ – ceviche from black clams.
Where to eat in Máncora?
La Sirena d’Juan
- – Widely considered Máncora’s best restaurant, praised for its bohemian-chic atmosphere.
- – Offers creative Peruvian fusion: Nikkei ceviche, sweet potato ravioli, seared tuna salad, and exotic cocktails using fruits and pisco variants
- – The restaurant service looks very personal and it’s a small cozy place
- – Price: Higher-end for Máncora (ceviche ~ 48 soles; mains around 65–68 soles)
ManQura Restobar
- – Carefully designed interior with architectural details and decor inspired by Northern Peruvian culture
- – Ceviche and tacu-tacu with seafood are standouts and shrimp cigars are popular
- – Service is highly personalized. The chef and owners are involved and explain the dishes
- – The price range is 35–90 PEN per person

- – Seaside terrace view and good for watching the sunse
- – I recommend to try ceviche, chicharon de pescado, and arroz con mariscos

- – Hidden location with an interesting Italian style painted mural
- – My favourite pizza was actually vegetariana that I tried one day
- – This place feels like stepping inside a portal to Italy

Best cafés with Wifi
Palmeras Eco Tienda
The surf style café is a great spot if you want to work in a calm environment. You will find here especially laid back surfers and kiteboarders hanging out. The place feels bohemian and has also an eco tienda where you can buy eco friendly products. In the café I recommend to go for a coffee and acai bowl.
La Biodega Café
One of my favourite spots because of the central location is La Biodega Café. You will get surrounded by a bohemian eco-friendly vibe. Definitely try the pastries and their cold coffee brew for a caffeine boost. Great place for working remotely because of the AC and reliable Wifi. The environment attracts surfers and yoga practisers that are into an eco friendly lifestyle.
Qdulce
This place surprised me, because it looks like a mini version of Starbucks. They copied the idea in a funny and photogenic way. It’s a great place to recover your energy with a cold frappuccino and brownie with ice cream. I recommend this place especially for some journaling or reading a book.
Qema Café
As a digital nomad I spend many days working remotely from Qema. It’s a very comfortable place to open up your laptop and enjoy a cafesito from fresh coffee beans with a tropical view. Most important for me is the comfortable table, good protection from the sun and at the same time open view with a breeze. That means you can be productive for a long time. Qema actually also has a co-working for a more office space environment. Further the café is a must go to enjoy some drinks with friends, having a romantic diner or just relax with a book.
El Mirador del Faro Café
If you are in Máncora you will definitely spot the iconic lighthouse. You can find a secret passage between the houses to follow a dusty road up te hill. After a climb on the stairs you will reach the viewpoint. I recommend to take a towel and fresh coconut to enjoy the sunset sitting near the lighthouse. More comfortable option is to go to El Mirador Del Faro Café and enjoy a coffee or refreshing drink on the swing with the viewpoint.
What to pack to Máncora?
Definitely prepare for hot weather so don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, swimming clothes, comfortable sport clothes, and a beach towel. In the night it can get a bit windy some days so bring a long sleeve t-shirt and a wind jacket for the lower season. Also a mosquito repellent can safe you some scratching in the night. Other cool tricks to get rid of them is using a van, mosquito net, and burning a mosquito coil. Try to keep the lights out and close well windows and doors. Further bring a portable laptop, world adapter, powerbank and GoPro for water activities or a camera with a long lens if you want to spot the surfers or kiteboarders from the beach.
Conclusion
Máncora, is a hidden gem in the north of Peru. It’s definitely worth it if you want to learn some surfing, kiteboarding or horseback riding. Also a tropical paradise to gain strengths after exploring the Sacred Valley or the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. It’s definitely the Caribbeans of Peru where you can relax, eat sea food, and enjoy the sunset.
